Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze coming to Wii U

Nintendo have pulled the curtains on Retro Studio’s new project  “Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze“, a new entry in the Donkey Kong country franchise, to be released later this year.

Immediately noticeable in the trailer below is a rejig of how the barrel blasting segments play out: the camera spins around more to create more dynamic camera angles and keep things exciting, though the rest of the game will operate in 2D.

Diddy’s longtime girlfriend Dixie Kong will also be playable in the game, adding the ability to hover in the air briefly with her ponytail, Rayman style. The other two Kongs return for duty as expected.

Underwater levels and segments, conspicuous by their absence in the Wii title, make a much welcomed return. Snow and ice are set to play a more dominant role too. You know, if the game’s title, the snow level and abundance of Viking-aligned penguins and walruses are anything to go by (hint – yes they are).

Between this and Mario Kart, a Wii U purchase is all but sealed for me.
