Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 Review (360, PS3)

All 3D Sonic games are bad ? … No, just this one.

There is greatness and potential in this sea of badness

In my opinion Sonic Team only ever made two fantastic 3D Sonic games, the definitive ones that came out on the Dreamcast. Sonic Heroes I hated because it appealed only to the likes of my sister, who has just turned 11.

The latest instalment seems to appeal to slightly older people as well.
Good! you’re thinking, it will be like Sonic Adventure 2, only will better graphics and insanely faster; but longer gameplay.

If you think this, you’re in for a shock.

We will start with the new character Sliver, he doesn’t run. He isn’t even fast. You can tell when Sonic Team runs out of ideas, they simply bung a new Hedgehog in. Oh no! By all means it worked with Shadow. Sonic Adventure 2 is my favourite Sonic game of all time.
But not so much with Silver. I think it was a bit too soon.

Speaking of speed. This game has so many unwanted loading screens, it’s not even remotely funny. Two loading screens, just for a man to explain the mission! What’s wrong with a blue box with an explanation?

Then there is the actual speed of the characters. I can see what they have done, made it feel much smoother, but to sacrifice that much speed? I don’t think so.

So, a diabolical game then?… Not entirely.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2006First of all let me clear a few things up. Anyone who says this game is unfinished is wrong. Anyone who says the camera had a mind of its own is wrong, apart from when running, slowly, through that bridge, in the middle of the town of Soleanna.

Also as far as controls go, only the light dash mid-air gets mixed up with the Bounce attack.

Ok good parts.

Graphics; in game and cut scenes are absolutely stunning. They really did take advantage of the new technology. I struggled to find any part of the game that wasn’t up to scratch.

Level Design, simply, challenging. When Sonic picks up speed (eventually) you really are on the edge of your seat, trying not to die.

Then there are the REALLY FAST BITS, usually at the end on Sonic’s levels. He will start running at unbelievable speeds. Of course this is all the Computers doing, it is part of the game. But just !!!!! its so good ! … Hard but … quick!

Now yes, there are some slightly corny songs for the themes of the characters, but the levels have an astonishing soundtrack. There is no other word for it.

Yes I know I have said more about the bad things in this game. I am not a Sonic hater by any means. Sonic brought me into the world of gaming. I am just saddened by the amount of badness in this game, I wanted to love it, I wanted to get that addiction I do to games I love, play it any time I get the excuse to. But I can’t, I only just like it, which is a shame.

You see Sonic Team should know where they have gone wrong. This game is by all means a good game… just. Just not as good as the Sonic Adventure games of yesteryear.

There is greatness and potential in this sea of badness, just. But it’s there alright!

The Good: Graphics – good ; Insanely fast parts are fun ; Level Design – Big plus; Soundtrack – Awesome.
The Bad: Everything else.
