Outplay Entertainment, a games publisher focusing on high-quality games for mobile and social platforms, today announced that it has raised $4m from existing investors, Pentech Ventures and the Scottish Investment Bank. This funding will be used to accelerate the expansion of its Dundee studio, new product development and marketing support for its current and future games.
Founded by games industry veterans Douglas and Richard Hare (The Collective, Foundation 9 Entertainment), Outplay’s primary focus is on providing consumers with high-quality, engaging, and above all, fun experiences that can be accessed and played across mobile platforms and social networks.
Douglas Hare, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Outplay, said: “This investment is testament to the fantastic progress the Outplay team has made developing and launching our first games, as well as the confidence Pentech and SIB have in our plans for the future and in our new game, Bubble Blaze, which launches globally yesterday. Industry and consumer reception to Bubble Blaze has been beyond our expectations and this new round ensures that we’ll be able to give it, as well as the other titles we have in the development pipeline, the support it needs to succeed in this highly competitive, global marketplace.”
Richard Hare, co-founder and President of Outplay, agreed: “The team that we’ve assembled in Dundee are super-talented, and are building high quality consumer experiences. Doug and I built our last companies in California but the talent of the engineers, designers, artists, & producers available in the area has validated our decision to move back to the UK and build the studio in Dundee. We have a hugely creative staff, developing a new range of genre defining games, and I look forward to expanding the team further”
Karen Thomson, chairman of Outplay and former President of AOL Europe: “Doug and Rich have done an outstanding job of building the studio in a very short period of time. Over the past 18 months, they have grown the company to 40 staff, developed and launched their first three free-to-play games, grown a substantial community of passionate players, and put in place the infrastructure to enable the studio to significantly expand whilst still delivering new and awesome product.”
Randy Breen, non-executive director of Outplay and former CEO of Social Gaming Network: “It’s been fun working with the team over the past 12 months. Their existing portfolio, together with the pipeline of games in development, demonstrate that they really understand how to utilise the capabilities of mobile devices in a natural and immersive game experience. Next year will see the release of new titles that make use of Augmented Reality and GPS and, based on the prototypes I’ve seen, I think Outplay are going to be the first to truly utilise these technologies in games that will appeal to the mass-market.”
