Well, you have all probably heard that Activision | Blizzard has scrapped Guitar Hero and True Crime. But what have they got in store for us instead? Here are some highlights of their December report.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm and Call of Duty: Black Ops were of course the highlights of the year for Activision. Call of Duty: Black Ops made $650 million in retail sales in its first five days of release adn has made over $1 Billion to date!
But it was not all good news. After dissapointing sales of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and a general decline in the music genre (their words), they have now decided to no longer pursue the franchise. Does this mean DJ Hero is next?
Another victim of their desire to “focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences” has seen the death of True Crimes: Hong Kong.
So what do they see as the “greatest opportunities that the company currently has”.
Well, Call of Duty for one – of course. In their words again there will be “robust investment in forthcoming Call of Duty titles, the development of a best-in-class digital community surrounding the Call of Duty franchise”
It is the last bit of that statement that is really interesting. “Digital Community Surrounding the Call of Duty franchise”.
In a call to Investors, Activision explained that Project Beachhead will will create an online community, content and services that is going to supercharge the online game experience. So looks like Call of Duty Online is a reality.
Another interesting comment in the report is about Bungie and the fact that it has a new property in the pipe line. No details on that yet, but should be interesting.
More details about these new projects are set to be announced a the Toy Fair later this week and
“will bring the world of toys, video games and the Internet together in an unprecedented way.”…. Apparently!
More on all of this as we get the details.
Head to the forums and let us know what you think of all of this.
Are you sad to see Guitar Hero go – or sadder that they are pumping their resources into yet another Call of Duty game!!
