Sam & Max Season 3 Episode 2: The Tomb of Sammun-Mak. Review (PC)

Adventure gaming honestly doen’t get a lot better than this.

The Tomb of Sammun’ Mak is the second instalment in the third series of Telltale’s Sam & Max episodic adventure games. This episode sees Sam & Max controlling their great, great uncles (or something along those lines) Samus & Maximus, who are almost exactly identical in terms of looks, voices & mannerisms, as they uncover the tomb of Sammun’ Mak hidden deep beneath the Sphunx in Egypt, and try to recover the mysterious ‘Devil’s Toy Box’. Of course it wouldn’t be an adventure game if it was that simple, Sam & Max have to control their ancestors through different points in their timeline & adventure in order to piece together the full story.

Sam & Max Season 3 Episode 2: The Tomb of Sammun-Mak.This story follows the previous instalment much more directly than in previous series’, meaning it’s slightly less accessible if you haven’t played the first episode, but honestly I think that by now most people have got the concept and play through the episodes in order so this isn’t really a major problem, and it did lend to the continuity of the story on a larger scale, which has sometimes been a little more hazy in the past.

I have high expectations for this series, and it looks like Telltale are going to deliver

Telltale have introduced some interesting & intuitive features for this series, which really helps to keep the gameplay mechanic fresh. While this is great most of the time, it does mean that some of the solutions to puzzles can take a while to find because they involve using Max’s psychic powers at certain times, when a much more logical solution seems the obvious choice.

The game’s graphics are fairly standard for this genre, but have certainly stepped up a little from the previous series – there are a couple of nice effects denoting that Sam & Max have been cursed, but nothing in this game is really going to make you sit back & marvel at the advances in technology. The same goes for sound – the music & sound effects are fitting to the game, and the voice acting is solid, especially from the main characters, but nothing really jumped out at me.

I really enjoyed playing this episode – it has a good story, which isn’t too hard to follow, and it lasted quite a while without becoming boring at any point. It had some challenging puzzles, and was generally enjoyable to play. In my last review I said that I have high expectations for this series, and it looks like Telltale are going to deliver. I highly recommend this to fans of adventure games, or anyone with some spare time to kill.

The Good: Great story, challenging puzzles, Potentially my favorite episode to date.;
The Bad: I have to wait another month before playing the next episode!;
