Borderlands Review (PS3)

Never ending weaponry!!!

If I told you that there was a game that had a “bazillion guns!!!” ….would you believe me?

Make way for the truth as Borderlands takes you to a wasteland infested with bad-ass bandits and awesome creatures for you to blow to pieces with the apparent “bazillion guns!!!”

This game completely took me by surprise. I paid no attention to Borderlands when I first heard about it mainly due to the fact that the preview just didn’t look that good, but I was clearly wrong!
Borderlands is now one of the best games I have ever played!

BorderlandsBorderlands drops you in an open world action game with RPG elements embedded within. You will play as 1 of 4 mercenaries that you can choose from;
“The Siren” – A woman who has the ability to turn invisible and manoeuvre faster than all the other characters.
“The Berserker” – A massive human tank who can withstand amazing amounts of punishment as well as smash his enemies to a pulp with his fist.
“The Soldier” – An expert with aiding others in battle, he can supply health and ammunition to any players nearby as well as kick ass with his deployable turret.
“The Hunter “- A sharpshooter ready for long range fire-fights and has a gifted pet hawk that will home in enemies and do considerable amounts of damage.
It is clear that all of these character have their own advantages in battle or when playing with other people.

Borderlands plays as a loot dropping game just like games such as World of Warcraft or Fallout 3. If you’re a fan of those games then you will probably like this game too as some of the loot that enemies drop in this game can be very rewarding. Enemies will drop all kinds of awesome weapons for you to use but these weapons are never really the same, they have different attributes literally every time. Weapons can also have elemental damage additions such as electricity, corrosion, flammability and explosive damage. This is where the game gets really damn good! With so many weapon modifications to enhance (e.g damage, fire-rate etc), all guns are never the same. So really when the game states that Borderlands has around a “Bazillion guns!!!” I honestly believe it.

BorderlandsAs you play through the game you will venture through a pretty big wasteland full of small to massive landmarks for you to visit and fight within. There will be a fair amount of enemies that you will have to battle with, but there isn’t much variety in enemy characters. You will come across similar looking bandits over and over again, and it’s the same with the creatures in the game. The only major difference is if some may have an elemental power added to them, therefore changing their colour appearance. Just a little more variety in the enemy character models would have been really nice.

Another nice addition in the RPG aspect to this game is that you can upgrade your character as you play through and as you level up, you will gain small perks to your special abilities and generally get stronger, spurring you on to play more.

One of the best things about Borderlands is its fantastic comic book style graphics. Everything in this game looks like it has come straight out of a graphic novel, and works amazingly well for this game. I took extra notice of the graphical aspects of the game when playing in mountain areas, the level of artistic value in the mountain area on this game is superb. You will see small flicks of colour and black lining marks where the artists have worked into the surroundings with excellence. The graphics are very reminiscent of Crackdown, yet Borderlands does the whole cartoon style much better. All weapons look great on the screen too, you will be able to see modifications made to the weapons from what colour they glow or what parts of the gun look different. Holding a rocket launcher that propels 3 rockets that happen to be on fire looks awesome!

Settle an argument with a friend over who has the best character with ease, just fight each other!

Everything may be good within this game but playing on your own and levelling up can become boring after some time. This is where Borderlands shows its best attributes with the online multiplayer option.

Borderlands allows you and 3 other friends to play the entire game together, do every quest, every level up, find every weapon as a group. Now this is what I adored about the game, playing online with your friends will have you staying up for hours. Quests become twice the fun due to the difficulty increase, finding weapons can be even more rewarding and you will be comparing weapons with your friends constantly begging them for a go with their fully automatic 6 shelled continuous firing shotgun.

With the multiplayer being so god damn fun and addictive, I feel that I should make this game sound even better by saying that it has a massive amount of replay value. If you and your friends have beaten the game once, just go do it again and again…and again…but you will not be able to exceed the level of 50. Once you reach level 50 you may just want to begin with a new character unless of course you feel like playing to find more high level weaponry. Within all the multiplayer aspects you can settle an argument with a friend over who has the best character with ease, just fight each other! Whoever wins has the better character. Simple.

BorderlandsBorderlands has exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed every minute of it whilst playing online, but the shear fun of grabbing loot and hoping that you have picked up an amazing weapon keeps this game going for me. I believe there is a lot of downloadable content to hit the game too which will not only make tit even better but will keep all players of Borderlands happy for a pretty long time.

I have not really mentioned much about any bad points of this game purely because there just isn’t anything that really bothers me about the game except the character model varieties.
I recommend this game to anyone that owns PS3 or Xbox 360, you will not be disappointed as long as you have someone to play it with!

Now Go! FIND THOSE AWESOME WEAPONS!

The Good: Fantastic art style, So many guns to play with, Nice environment, One of the best games to play online.
The Bad: Enemy character models repeat themselves a lot.
