Opoona Review (WII)

Simple watered down RPG that wont appeal to many

The age range for this game is 7+ but I’m an open minded person and I will try anything, especially when it’s an RPG. How any 7 year old could get to grips with this game is beyond me, it’s far too complicated.

Your character is Opoona who is a Tizian, they are funny looking people who are able to control energy into a ball that stays close to them that they can use as a weapon, it may float above their heads or be in place of their legs, which adds to the cartoon nature of the game.

The control system is unique but a little odd

It may seem I know the full story but this was only after sitting through 30 minutes of conversation right at the beginning of the game, I was loosing interest already. When I finally got to control my character it was another 30 minutes of running around on what seemed like pointless errands of “go see this person” that I managed to actually fight someone.

The control system is unique but a little odd, when you are faced by an enemy you have to move the nunchuck stick in one of four directions (up,down, left, right) until your ball is charged to the desired amount (lots of energy or a little) you then let the stick go and the ball flies toward the enemy and hits them, taking some of their hit points off. That’s it. That really is all you can do. OpoonaIf you send the ball off using maximum energy you then have to sit there and wait for it to recharge fully before you can use it again, all the time getting hit by the enemy. needless to say this can be very frustrating.

The experience point system is pretty standard for an RPG, if you kill monsters you gather points and money to gain levels but this is a very slow process, and after 20 battles I still had not gained a level.

The graphics are ok, in places. The game is presented in a cell shaded way (think XIII) and whilst it is a good look for the game it could have been polished a bit more. There is lots of graphical tearing everywhere that is apparent from the outset. I dont see how any developer could release a game in such a terrible state, I know the Wii isn’t a forerunner in the graphical charts compared to other systems but I feel more of an effort could have been made.

Opoona is a kids game yes, but as a whole it is boring and far too complicated for their target market.

The Good: Easy control system; Might appeal to a younger audience
The Bad: Graphics are well below standard; Mind numbingly boring and lengthy conversations
