Gunnar Optiks Vayper Review

Since I first started to get interested in Gunnar Optiks gaming glasses, they seem to have gone from strength to strength, with deals from the likes of Steelseries and MLG really boosting them.

Today I get the chance to tell you about another great new pair of glasses from them, the Vayper. I have spoken before about the ins and outs of the Gunnar Optiks glasses and all of the clever technology that goes into them. Below are some basic, straight from the site details. Check out my Gunnar Desmo review for some other info as well.

  • Adjustable silicone nose pads provide a customizable fit
  • Fastener free hinge design and high tensile steel construction create incredible durability
  • Gently curved temples provide necessary retention to keep eyewear in place
  • Ultra slim temples distribute headphone pressure to ensure headset compatibility

The technology behind the lenses does not alter all that much from style to style.  You still get the i-AMP lens technology, the IONIK amber tint and all the other good stuff you expect from Gunnar. With the what you also get is a bit of style and some serious comfort.

Unlike the Desmo’s, the Vayper’s look pretty good (remember all things are relative), you don’t feel like a cheap Elvis impersonator whilst wearing them. They are also extremely light, I mean to the point you forget they are their – if it wasn’t for the slight yellow tint to the world.

Hardly a Super Model!

One of my favourite things about them is the arms of these glasses.  The way Gunnar design their gaming glasses is to make them comfortable to wear when gaming (duh). Most gamers now, especially on the pro circuit, can be seen where headsets.  Headsets push down on your ears something rotten and when you look at most glasses, they have big hooks that sit behind the ears – not all that comfortable. The arms on the Vaper (like the Desmo) are flat, this makes them really comfortable when you are wearing a headset for long periods of time.

There are very few flaws to this design. The lenses are smaller than some other pairs, but more than sufficient for extended play sessions, I have had no issues with light bleeding in from the edges.

The main question I am asked all the time, is do they work. My answer is a resounding yes! Now, as I have pointed out before, these won’t make you a better gamer. This isn’t some kind of cyber targeting headset.  What they do is improve the contrast of the screen, reduce some of the glare and help reduce eye fatigue and strain during marathon game sessions.  What I will say is, you have to give them a little time. It can be uncomfortable to adjust to using them, but persevere and it is well worth it.

For those of us who need prescription lenses, this can be catered for. It is not cheap to get lenses made, but without the right prescription for you, they are not going to do much good!

Style (ish), comfortable and they work. All you can ask for in a pair of gaming glasses!
