Star Trek: D-A-C Review (360, XBLA)

The latest Star Trek game from the XBLA Market place.

A new Star Trek film marks the release of a new, yet rather small Star Trek game on the XBLA Marketplace. But is it kind of a disappointment?

Star Trek: D-A-C throws you into skirmish based scenarios using different types of spaceships to destroy your opponents. Basically, thing about Geometry Wars thrown into a Star Trek world. Yet even though the game says it’s Star Trek, it doesn’t really feel like Star Trek at all which will be a disappointment to all Star Trek Fanatics.

There is a few game modes to play through offline or online, though the game does not follow any storyline, it’s a ‘pick up and play’ game which is fun in some respects.

Doesn’t really feel that much Star Trek

Team death-match was the first mode I played on. It was your basic 6 Vs. 6 set up, 50 kills marks the defeat of the opposing team or to which team has the most kills at the end of the time limit. It was fun to play at first but got old really quickly, as I found myself doing the same thing over and over again.

The next mode I tried was Assault. Assault was an attack and defend based game mode. One round you played as the attacker, this meant you would have to go forth and battle the opposing team for their base. If you are defending you have to fend off any enemy ships that come near by in order to keep your base for a longer period of time. It’s a fun mode to play and can be very fast paced at times.

The final game mode I tried was Conquest. Conquest is another base orientated game but this time the bases can be captured by either teams. You basically battle it out until your team has been in the base long enough for the capture meter to become full then you move on to your next target. I found this mode to be the most enjoyable, this mode seemed to work really well with the fast paced battles against the opposing team.

Two teams are available to use online or offline during play. You can either be The Federation or The Romulans, but it really doesn’t matter who you choose because they are statistically equal. Both teams come with 3 ships a bomber, fighter and a flagship. Whilst playing game you will come across powers up that can be grabbed which add health or extra gun power. Nothing over the top or too original I’m afraid.

Overall, the game is okay but it lacks depth and ambition. The game modes are too simple and repetitive. There are some nice visuals at times but nothing outstanding for a XBLA download.

I can’t help but wonder why this game was even made. Surely a full action packed game on disk would have been a better move for the release of the new Star Trek film? (But one that is actually good).

Major fans of Star Trek will be disappointed by this game as it doesn’t really feel that much Star Trek. I am also sure that the fans would have definitely liked to have seen a much more in depth game for the franchise.

Spend your money at the cinema and enjoy the film instead.

The Good: Fun and fast paced, Some nice visuals.
The Bad: Gets reptitive, Lacks depth.
