I just hope the movie is better…
Now then, this is an interesting review to write, because, like me, I am sure you have made up your mind on what kind of game Space Chimps is � Being that it is based on a kids animated movie, and it is on the Wii. Now usually this would mean a sub standard platformer, with a few mini games that utilise the Wii controller. And you would be right. This ticks all the boxes that you would associate with this kind of game. Which is a shame really, because everybody loves talking monkeys don’t they!

Now not having seen the movie, I cannot comment on how close the 2 mediums are but I am pretty sure, this being a video game, that there are some liberties taken in both the gameplay and locations on show here. Talking of gameplay, space chimps feels very familiar, now that may be because every platform clich� has been used here, take away the chimps, and you could be playing spyro or any other platformer.
Jump, climb, fly and melee through the levels, then add some first person shooting, and you get the idea what this game involves.
Graphics are always an issue for the Wii, so I didn’t exactly expect stunning graphics, but some of the camera angles and pop ups are just plain lazy! The characters do resemble the simian cast from the movie, but considering it’s animated anyway, I guess it’s not that hard to emulate! The fmv cut scenes are of an adequate nature.
The voice acting seems fine, but I wouldn’t know if it uses the actors from the actual movie.
Now since I had to put this game through its paces, I had been playing for a couple of hours, when my 7 year old son asked if he could play on the Wii, I explained I was playing a game that I needed to review, and would he mind watching for a bit, then I would let him have a go himself. After 10minutes he got bored and powered up his DS and was back on “viva pi�ata”, I asked him if he wanted a go, and he said�”no thanks dad, it looks a bit boring!” and you know what�he was bloody right!
I am afraid I cannot recommend this game to anyone, it’s just a lazy movie conversion, just like we have seen time & time again. Could do better�a lot better!
