One of Ubisoft’s greatest achievements.
Ubisoft has over the years made some winning games. A fine example is the “Prince of Persia” series, in which great gameplay was combined with a great story line. There was not a great amount of anticipation coming from me towards Assassin’s Creed, since I had only discovered it a short while before I got my PS3. The source of discovery was my friend Aaron, who was lucky enough to have gained a PS3 in the early days of it’s release. He introduced me to some of the games, one of which was Assassin’s Creed.
Assassin’s Creed is set during the 3rd crusade, the apparent year in the game is 1191. You follow an assassin (pretty obvious) named Altair. He is a member of the clan of assassin’s and you set out on a mission to eliminate 9 key people that are plotting out the crusades. You play Altair through one of his ancestors in the future, for a company who is allegedly trying to find something hidden in the past around the time of Altair being alive. There are 4 main cities to explore, Jerusalem, probably the most commonly known, Damascus, Masayaf and Acre. This story line gives the game a great edge, also taking into account that the games environment is based on actual historic fact.
On first glance the game already took my breath away, I knew that the PS3 was made for the next generation in graphical capability, but I did not know that it could be exploited to this level. Everything is catered for,
The cities are vast in size and filled with areas to explore.
every detail included, you can look around each city and not find a single fault, you find yourself immersed inside the game, and you really feel like part of the action. This, combined with the fact that these cities are apparently modeled on the real cities back in the day, I think they’ve done pretty well.
Next thing is the amazing gameplay, once inside the game, you’ll find that you can go pretty much anywhere! The cities are vast in size and filled with areas to explore. To do this, you also have superb maneuverability, you can run and climb and walls, walk all over the rooftops, jump between houses, and lots, lots more. This running up walls lark and all these skillful moves could be related to Ubisoft’s past achievement with Prince of Persia, which was also a bloody good game, nice to see that they’ve put a bit of that in it. You have 4 main weapons, your trusty traditional sword, used to mash your way through anyone who takes your fancy, your quick and nifty throwing knives, used to take down enemies from a distance, or your more discreet wrist knife, used to kill people on the sly.
The only thing I can say against this game, is that the controls are a bit messy, it takes a while to adjust, but once you have your ready to go and do whatever you like. Perhaps one other point that people may have felt is that no multiplayer capability was added to the game, slashing people online would have been a great feature, a thought for the future perhaps.
In conclusion, this game has to be one of my favourites, I would even go as far to say that it comes pretty close to GTA IV 😀 Anyone who makes this purchase would certainly not be dissapointed, nice one Ubisoft.
