Better than a night out with Angelina Jolie!
Worms is one of those great games that would seem to have been around since the dawn of time (well of computers anyway). I remember version on the Amiga, the SNES and Megadrive, the PC, in fact almost any format I can think of there was a version of Worms on it.
potentially the best Worms game since the original!
As with all great games, time can sometimes be cruel, as money hungry publishing houses clamour to produce sequels to cash in on the name. Hence we had such greats as Lemmings 3D or Worms Forts.
However, sometimes there is a rare occasion where a developer will think, “What made this game so great back in the day and how can I recapture that”. This kind of thinking can bring about games like Worms Armageddon 2.
This is a step back to basics, but with some great additions that make it stand out from the games of old (yes Concrete Donkey I mean you). Starting off, you get to create your team of worms, give them names give them a look and even choose their team grave stone! Once you are set up you are ready to go.
For anyone who has never played Worms, the idea is very simple. Your team must be the last team standing in a battle of rockets, machine guns and sheep (to name but a few weapons). Each weapon has unique uses, but most must take into account gravity, wind direction and wind strength. Get it wrong and you may find your rocket coming back at you! To assist you have some non offensive moves as well. You can move around the map, although you have a set time limit to complete any actions. Not only this, you can use ropes and teleports to get to hard to reach hidey holes.
Worms Armageddon 2 adds some nice features to the Worms armoury. New weapons can be found that have all of the humour of the original games, but without being too outrageous. The most interesting feature is the wireless multiplayer. Now you can play against people all around the world for positions on the league tables. This is a really nice idea and means that even if you have no friends you can still play the multiplayer games!
Single player mode has been given a few good extras. There is a nice Puzzle mode, where you must complete specific objectives, like get to the exit of the map. There are also a few mini games that make use of the DS touch screen and mic. I especially enjoyed blowing into the mic to get my worm from one end of the map to the other!!
My only real complaint about the DS version is the lack of use it makes of the unique features the DS offers for it’s main game. The touch screen can be used to aim and move, but is not really much help. The top screen by default just shows the top of the scenery, which is usually sky. You can switch it to a map, but really it is not the most inspired use ever!
Worms Armageddon 2 is a great time waster and potentially the best Worms game since the original! The single player mode will have you losing hours of your day and the multi player could take you out of action for weeks. With clean graphics, great sound and sick sense of humour this is a must for DS owners!
The Bad: Use of the dual screen is a bit pointless
