The Review

The Spiderwick Chronicles
[quote[I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. For some reason, filmmakers have got it into their heads that every time they make a movie a game should follow. Presumably to cover the losses they make to piracy and my god it shows in this game!

Evidence that shows that A this game was made in a matter of months not years, and B made to a budget; is to be found in the cinematics? which are lifted straight from the film. At least I don't have to go and see it now. And also it must be mentioned that the surroundings and scenery in every part of the overall map, which is very small, is as about as interactive as a mouse mat. Its there, just doesn't do much if anything at all.
More evidence can be found in the graphics, all in game because of the lack of cinematics; these are rubbish; you could pump the same graphical output from a Gamecube. Its like they just didn't bothered, they had all the futuristic power of the next gen consoles and got, half arsed. ?Na I'd rather work on this FPS, guns n that, killing aliens, yeaaahhhhh.? I'll tell you what its like, its like hiring the best chief in the world, expecting a fabulous, exotic meal, and him coming out with beans on toast.
Now I would like to comment on the soundtrack but all I got was the very noisy wale of the Xbox 360, reading the disc. In a car you want lots of noise from the engine, on a console? no. Ruins the experience. Anyway I sorted this by using headphones? My ears BLED, I had never heard such a revolting soundtrack in my entire life and it wasn't epic, nor exciting, or purposeful. It was trying, trying to be humorous. So I took the headphones off and had the sweet sound of a 360 wale.
But the most dreary, irritating, part of this game is the gameplay. Repetition kicks in way too fast, the game itself I cleared in just over 2 hours. Far too short. And some quests are annoying and stupid. There are attempts to break the ice, but that's all they are, attempts.
I don't like the fact you have to paint sprites you catch, and the loading screens which are just a bunch of leaves? why?
If I am totally honest I didn't like this game even before I played it. A; because it's a movie orientated game, which never work, and B; the case cover was ghastly.
However despite all this cheapness, badness and down right laziness there are two things which are both good and annoying.
Firstly, the brightness adjust at the very start of the game. Now I have played many games where the change is subtle. But in this one it is either super dark whereby you can't see anything or super light where you can see, everything! And the best bit is that default is close to super dark! Insanity!

And finally this game does have this rather annoying charm about it while your playing it, similar can be found in the Toy Story 2 game on the original PlayStation.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone; it is technically a very poorly made game. But if you ignore me and buy it anyway, get the 360 version so your ears are protected from the dreadful soundtrack.
