The Review
Well here it is, Episode 3 of Sam and Max season 1.
Before we start you should check out my review of Episode 1 Review.
If you can't be bothered to do that, here is a small overview of what this is all about.
The duo of Sam and Max are "Freelance Police". Max is a psychotic bunny and Sam is a trigger happy, but more level headed dog.
In this 6 part series of games they have been tasked with solving a case each episode, all of which appear to be linked in some way.
Along the way the meet and abuse various new and repeat characters.
You control Sam using a very intuitive icon driven menu. This allows you to interact with the environment, other characters and also to use items on them.
To start a conversation all you need to do is click on the character you wish to chat to and you will be presented with a list of things to say. As with the other 2 episodes the dialogue is generally very good. The script is again witty and at times hilarious. The section where you have to insult a depressed card cheats mother to get info out of him will stay with me for many months!
The return of Bosco is also most welcome, albeit disguised as a French man (!?)
Something I did not notice before is how handy it is to talk to Max. If you get stuck you can ask him for advice. Normally this will jog your mind enough to figure out the current puzzle.
This episode sees you trying to stop Ted E. Bear and his toy mafia from flooding the world with Hypno Bears (it makes sense in the game, trust me!!
The most difficult thing about reviewing this game, is that it is not really a new game, it is merely the next chapter in a larger game. It is like reviewing level 1 of COD and then seperately reviewing level 2 and then level 3. Not much has changed. The graphics are the same, good but not ground breaking. The sound is excellent, with a brilliantly written and delivered script.
However there is a change in this episode. It seems shorter and a lot easier! I had completed it within a couple of hours. That is not a bad thing in a way as it is a very fun ride, but now I am sad as I will have to wait until they release Episode 4.
I think this series should go down in history as one of the funniest set of games ever. It is also proof that point and click is not dead!
Buy this chapter, but play it slowly, in between other more action based games. At less than $9 (about 5 quid) it is great value for money!!
