Project Natal scares me...

Postby Phoenix Trigger » Tue Jun 02, 2009 6:39 pm

So Microsoft unveiled their new motion sensing unit this week in an ad so corny it would make the Brady Bunch vomit...and it frightens me...

All the stuff listed in the advert that you can do just seems so unbelievealbly otherworldly that it's almost too good to be true. It's made me look at all present day technology as primative as a pointy rock on a stick. It's all very, VERY cool, yet makes me feel that we've stepped into the realms of 'Minority Report'.
D'ya reckon it's gonna hold up it's promises, or come with a few fatal flaws that will hinder it majorly on release? Personally, I'm sceptical that all the technology will be able to work perfectly at first and may need some updates, but if it does, then wow.
Oh, and there's something bizzarely evil about the name 'Project Natal'...

I can't see it ever working to be honest, and the fact that it's made by Microsoft makes me even more skeptical. Also, it would probably end up like the eyetoy, with only certain games being compatible, and only about 5 or 6 of those games ever existing.

The advert-type thing I saw for it did make it look pretty nice, but I doubt it's going to work flawlessly or even well to be honest

I think it will work properlly, but won't live up to the expectations it has raised. It just seems like a huge technological leap, perhaps even ahead of its time. Wonder how FPS's would be played out on it...I mean, can it detect your trigger finger rapidly jittering away? :P

Also found it weird how I actually warmed more to the skateboarding controller in 'Tony Hawk's: RIDE' rather than the kid scraping his foot against a carpet like he's frantically trying to get rid of something on the bottom of his shoe...

The problem is, what gamer is going to want to physically act out an entire game. Say Halo or Gears is the first two blockbuster games for Natal who is going to spend 6-8 hours straight playing either of those if they have to do more than sit on the couch and press on a controller.

Hehe fair point, it's one thing sitting on the couch pretending you're driving a car but to be standing up for hours ducking and dodging and lobbing grenades etc could be a bit off-putting

If Rock Band starts using it you could save a lot of money on accesories by simply miming guitar and drums :P

Ok, so, on the one hand, it does sound a bit like skynet, however, on the other hand, it is one step closer to everyone having their own personal holodeck!

Personally I'm willing to risk our 360's rising up and forming a global network of terror in order to nuke humanity into the past to possibly be able to play Han in my own personal retelling of the star wars saga, the one where Luke and Leia take it a bit further than a kiss and end up feeling really awkward while I sit back and laugh.

Although am I the only person that is looking at the possible non gaming prospects of natal? Like the ability to control your 360 minority report style, imagine bringing that to the PC as well, to your TV, no more remote controls, you just swipe your hand to change channels. I have thought of a few gaming uses, an RTS maybe, what about a point and click adventure? everyone seems to be worried about using it with shooters, but there is a world of other possibilities in other genres as well.
