C.O.R.E for DS - Preview
a meteor has crashed into the Earth. The largest single impact on the earth in a millennium is being investigated by the government at a special research facility (C.O.R.E) built alongside impact site.

For 20 years the scientists have been drilling into the Earth trying to reach the centre of the meteor and unlock its secrets. Just recently a news blackout was declared for the site and rumours started of an incredible find. Suddenly all communication with the base was lost. With no information on what might have happened and a new strange radiation emanating from the site a special forces team is needed to investigate, your mission as part of that team is to find the answers.

Here at YARS we love a bit of hand-held action, and feel the humble DS is a bit thin on the ground when it comes to quality FPS fun.

The guys at NoWay Studios have seen fit to redress the balance.Due out later this year, we have been sent some preview code of C.O.R.E.

Getting straight to the meat of the game, we have a game that reminds us of the hayday of id software...ie it plays like Doom and Quake- which is fine by us. Control is the same as existing FPS (like metroid prime hunters & COD 4) in that you use the stylus to look, the d-pad to move and the left shoulder button to shoot.

The 2 levels we have been lucky enough to play seem well designed with just the right amount of items, ammo and of course baddies to keep your interest in entering the next door, or rounding the next corner.

The only downside we can see, is that it is very basic, in that it doesnt have the bells and whistles that, say metroid prime hunters does. It is basically a DS homage to Doom, not that it`s a bad thing, and possibly later levels offer something more, but the 2 levels we experienced offered only limited puzzles in the classic sense: find the keycode or password to open locked door.

Finally I would like to say the weapons do feel pretty meaty considering we are talking DS here, and the Shotgun is particulary satisfying.

So, let us hope the final game increases the bar on the later levels, as the DS is due another quality shooter- read the full review here...as soon as it is available.
