Big Bang Mini Review (DS)

The first really good shooter for the DS of 2009

At first glance, you would be forgiven for writing this of as another generic shooter trying to copy the looks of Geometry Wars.
The bright, neon graphics, the stylish psychedelic explosions, it is all there.

Well you would be so wrong.

I urge anyone to go and buy big bang mini

The idea of the game is simple, shoot the bad guys on the top screen, then collect the stars they drop, using your ship on the bottom screen

But this is not done in the way you would expect. Rather than controlling a ship that just shoots bullets straight up, you are in control of both a ship and an invisible fireworks launcher. Swipe the stylus on the touch screen and you will launch a firework in that direction. You can swipe anywhere in the screen, not just where your ship is, leaving your ship vulnerable every shot you make. Touching and dragging your ship will allow you to dodge enemy bullets and falling debris, as well as collect stars. Collect enough stars and you will move on to the next level.

Big Bang MiniAt first it seems like a simple matter of just launching as many fireworks as possible straight up. Very quickly you find that this is a terrible plan, as every time you miss, the firework will shower you with deadly debris. You have to aim each shot carefully, but very quickly!

There is a tutorial at the start to help you get the hang of this, but it really is a very intuitive system, that will only take you a few minutes to get to grips with.

Each stage brings unique environments, enemies and distinct challenges, making every level a fun and different experience. When you consider there are 90 of them to be getting on with, this makes for a great deal of value!
Each level can be completed in 2 or 3 minutes, making this the perfect game to have in your pocket on the commute to work / school.

Big Bang Mini is an imaginative and enjoyable treat of light, sound and fabulous game play, which is above all fun to play. Add to that a real retro vibe and I urge anyone to go and buy big bang mini; I don’t think you will regret it!

The Good: Very simple, looks gorgeous, sounds great, retro feel, FUN!!
The Bad: Very simple
