Onslaught Review (WII)

Generic bug blaster that may just be fun!

Onslaught is an odd game. It is the first Hudson Wii Ware title that I have played, the first FPS on the Wii that I have played and it has left me with very mixed emotions.

On the one hand it is cheap, is an FPS and to be quite honest is a fun little shooter. On the other it is a generic blaster, has appalling sound, some dodgy graphics and very little variation.

Let me start to explain the nature of this game with a quote from their site.

“In the distant future, contact with a distant research colony is lost and your team is sent in to find out what happened. Upon arrival, you’re attacked by overwhelming numbers of mysterious creatures. It’s up to you and your squad to eliminate the threat and discover the truth that lies deep inside the colony”

it is really quite a laugh

So you start of as a survivor of a crash landing on some generic planet. You must get to your base and try to find the rest of your team. To do this you must dispose of hoards of giant robot insects with your selection of weapons.

Along the way you will meet some special forces troops who will in their way try to help you progress. I say in their way because the are thick as pig muck!

As you kill insects you will start to see and hear various congratulatory messages, like great and good as your combos increase. Bizarrely you also get negative messages like “That’s why you are still a kid”. which is a bit strange. It seems they got a lot of the audio and indeed visual text mixed up in translation.

OnslaughtGraphics are ok, but you can not expect much from such a small download! They do the job and do not embarrass themselves. Everything is very generic, the characters the environments, but you are not here to sight see!!

An interesting feature is the ability to change the formation of your team, they can be at your sides or behind you shooting backwards. It may not seem much, but it helps you out in tight corners!

On the weapons front you start with quite a selection. You get a shotgun, machine gun, pistol, RPG, grenades and a whip(!?). As you progress these can all be upgraded in various ways.

The Wii controls are made good use of and are very intuitive. Flick the WiiMote to reload, use the Nunchuck to throw grenades and use the whip. Also you use it to wipe the insects acidic blood from your face!

All in all this is a fun little game. It feels a bit like an on rails shooter in the vein of Time Crisis. It is very arcadey, but this is a good thing. it has the true pick and play appeal. With a nice number of levels there is enough to keep you playing for a few days and the online mode is fun (if you can find other players)

Don’t expect Call of Duty, but for what it is… a Wii Ware title … it is really quite a laugh!

The Good: Simple, unashamed arcade blasting, Good weapons
The Bad: Terrible sound, slow
